The Basenji is an ancient breed, of hunting dog. It was bred from stock that originated in central Africa. Basenjis are a lovely sight at a standstill but more impressive yet at a fast trot, when they exhibit the long, smooth strides of a mini-racehorse. The Basenji is a primitive or pariah-type dog who originated in as a hunting dog in Africa. They love to run and jump, and if they do not burn off enough excess energy throughout the day, are prone to destructive chewing. Basenjis are known for being a very quiet breed.
