History of Cockapoo

 

Cockapoo is the first of the designer dogs dating back to the 1960s rather than to just a few years ago. The Cockapoo Club of America was founded in 1998 by Mary D. Foley. Its goal is to breed the perfect family pet. It has been a well-known designer dog breed in the United States since the 1950s.

There are currently three US-based clubs working to standardize Cockapoo breeding: The Cockapoo Club of America and North American Cockapoo Registry, both founded in 1999, and the American Cockapoo Club, formed in 2004

Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as hunting dogs in the United Kingdom. The Cocker Spaniel which comes in two distinct breeds the English and the American Cocker Spaniels. Appearance & Characteristics

Cockapoos have a sturdy, square-built appearance. The Cockapoo will generally have a coat that can be anything from straight to quite curly. Their eyes are almost always brown and will generally be well-set and large.

The Cockapoo is accepted to be a pleasant, tolerant, and patient dog that associates well with children and other animals. They are a very smart type of dog and are also quite curious. They are social, enjoying time around their family and other people, and enjoy the opportunity to perform and be the center of attention.

Eyes: The eyes should not have a droopy appearance. The color of the eyes should be dark brown on dogs with black noses.

Neck: The neck rises strongly from the shoulders and arches slightly as it tapers to join the head.

Topline:  The top line is level- to-slightly sloping toward the hindquarters.

Body: The length from the body measured from the breastbone to the rump is approximately the same to slightly longer than the height from the highest point of the shoulder to the ground. The body must be of sufficient length to permit a straight and free stride.

Chest: The chest is deep and moderately wide, with well-sprung ribs, its lowest point no higher than the elbow.

Shoulders: The shoulders are well laid back, forming an angle with the upper arm of approximately 90 degrees, permitting easy movement and forward reach.

Forelegs: forelegs are parallel, straight, with strong pasterns. Legs should be set close to the body.

Front Feet: Front dew claws can be left or removed, back dewclaws should be removed.

 

Hindquarters

When viewed from behind, the legs are parallel when in motion and at rest. Moderately angled at the stifle and clearly defined thighs. When standing, the rear toes should be behind the point of the rump.

Cockapoos have three different coat types. There is the tight curly coat, the medium curls, and the flat coat.

The Cockapoo is a mixed breed, there may be less of a susceptibility to the genetic health problems that are more common in the purebred dogs from either side of their ancestry. The Cockapoo Club of America stresses breeding for health and better temperament rather than confirmation. As a result, these dogs are relatively healthier than either of their parent breeds.

Feeding Plan

Cockapoos like to eat and can quickly become overweight. They need to be fed a high-quality diet of dry kibble. Dry food will help to prevent oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. A raw food plan involves some careful planning and purchase of meat, and the diet itself will usually consist of raw meat, bone and offal. But the general rule is to feed the equivalent of 2% to 3% of the dog’s total body weight.  Portion adjustments can be made later if necessary.

The Cockapoo does not require a tremendous amount of exercise, as long as he or she receives a daily walk and some playtime, the breed can live happily in just about any home, from an apartment in a large house or a farm.
